Glandore Environmental Planting Project

Project Information:

The Glandore Environmental Planting Project is a large-scale reforestation initiative located on the 'Glandore' property, approximately 30km north-east of the coastal town of Elliston on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Registered on February 10, 2023, the project covers a total area of 2,565 hectares. The surrounding region is part of the Western Eyre Peninsula agricultural district, an area traditionally dominated by winter cereal cropping and sheep grazing.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings methodology, which incentivizes the establishment of permanent native forests on land that was previously cleared for agricultural use for at least five years. While the standard requirement for such projects is a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare to achieve forest cover, the proponent, Canopy Nature Based Solutions (a subsidiary of Greening Australia), often targets significantly higher densities to recreate complex, biodiverse vegetation communities.

Environmentally, the Elliston region experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with annual rainfall generally ranging between 350mm and 500mm. The soils in this landscape are typically calcareous earths and shallow sands over calcrete, which are naturally nutrient-poor and prone to wind erosion when cleared.

This project is notable for its scale and ecological ambition; corporate reports from Greening Australia highlight that over 365,000 trees were planted at Glandore in 2024 alone, targeting the re-establishment of critically endangered vegetation communities. Additionally, the site holds cultural significance, lying on Country where traditional Wombat and Wedge-tailed Eagle storylines converge.
