Tuckurimba Park Environmental Plantings Project
ERF178561
Project Information:
The Tuckurimba Park Environmental Plantings Project is an environmental planting project located in the rural locality of Tuckurimba, approximately 15 kilometers south of Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Registered in October 2022, the project covers a total area of 64.30 hectares. The project area is situated within the Lismore City Council local government area, a region characterized by its humid subtropical climate and high rainfall, often exceeding 1,200mm annually.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2014. This methodology involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that was previously cleared and used for agricultural purposes, in this case, for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. The primary activity involves planting a mix of species native to the local area to re-establish forest cover. The carbon abatement is calculated using the FullCAM model, which estimates the biomass density of the trees as they grow.
The Tuckurimba area is traditionally known for diverse agricultural land uses, including grazing (beef and dairy) and horticulture, supported by the region's generally fertile soils, which often range from volcanic red krasnozems on plateaus to alluvial clays in the floodplains. By transitioning this land from agricultural use to permanent native forest, the project aims to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while potentially offering co-benefits such as improved biodiversity and soil stability in the catchment.
