Project Information:
Ingham's Murarrie Fuel Substitution Project is a fuel switching and energy efficiency project located at Murarrie, approximately 7.5km east of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland. It was registered in February 2023 and covers an unknown area, though it operates within the footprint of an existing industrial facility.
Industrial and commercial emissions reduction projects involve modifying, installing, or replacing equipment to reduce energy consumption or substitute fuel types. The standard requirements for this methodology include establishing a clear historical energy-use baseline for the existing emissions-producing equipment, and implementing an ongoing measurement and verification plan to accurately calculate the net emissions avoided by the energy upgrades.
The Murarrie region is known for its mixed land use, being predominantly industrial along the Brisbane River, accompanied by suburban residential housing and open green spaces. The area is considered high rainfall, averaging over 1,300mm of rain annually, and soils are generally deep alluvial clays, silts, and sands.
This project includes installing equipment to generate and provide electricity that would otherwise be drawn from the grid, alongside fuel substitution activities. An interesting note about this location is that it hosts Ingham's major primary poultry processing plant, which is highly recognised for its sustainability efforts. In 2021, the Murarrie team achieved Platinum certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship. As part of this world-class environmental initiative, the site rejuvenated six local ponds to hold 60 million litres of water, significantly reducing both trade waste and site water consumption while creating a fantastic habitat for local wildlife.
