Project Information:

Ingham's Murarrie Fuel Substitution Project is an industrial emissions reduction initiative located in the suburb of Murarrie, approximately 9km east of the Brisbane Central Business District in Queensland. Registered in February 2023, the project operates within Ingham's major poultry processing facility, situated in a prominent industrial zone near the southern bank of the Brisbane River. The surrounding region is defined by heavy commercial and industrial land use, forming part of the Australian Trade Coast precinct.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Industrial and Commercial Emissions Reduction) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology credits activities that reduce emissions from industrial processes, including upgrading equipment to be more energy-efficient or switching fuel sources. Specifically, this project involves modifying or replacing emissions-producing equipment and installing new infrastructure to generate electricity on-site. The primary goal is to displace electricity that would otherwise be drawn from the grid, which in Queensland has a high fossil-fuel intensity, with cleaner, self-generated energy.

Environmentally, the Murarrie region experiences a subtropical climate with high rainfall, averaging over 1,000mm annually. While the site is heavily developed, the underlying soil composition in this riverside area typically consists of alluvial clays. Interestingly, the Ingham's Murarrie facility is a leader in corporate sustainability, having achieved Platinum certification under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard. The site utilizes an Advanced Water Treatment Plant and has rejuvenated on-site ponds to support local biodiversity, demonstrating a broader commitment to environmental management beyond just carbon abatement.
