Weranga Soil Carbon Project
ERF177327
Project Information:
The Weranga Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located near the rural locality of Weranga, approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Dalby in the Western Downs region of Queensland. Registered in November 2022, the project originally covered an area of roughly 2,211 hectares, though a variation in October 2025 reduced the project area, likely to exclude non-compliant land or infrastructure.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon Methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon. To achieve this, the proponent, CFC Cattle Company Pty Ltd, implements new management activities such as altering stocking rates, grazing duration, and intensity. These changes are designed to increase biomass and ground cover, thereby driving carbon inputs into the soil profile.
The Weranga region is situated in a transitional zone between the fertile black soil plains of the Darling Downs and the lighter country to the west. The area typically features sandy loams or solodized soils rather than the deep cracking clays found closer to Dalby. The climate is sub-tropical to semi-arid with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm, making the land primarily suitable for grazing, which aligns with the project's focus on cattle management.
This project is facilitated by Carbon Link, a prominent Australian soil carbon service provider known for utilizing advanced technology for soil measurement and sampling.
