Weranga Soil Carbon Project
ERF177327
Project Information:
Weranga Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near the rural locality of Weranga, approximately 63km southwest of Dalby in the Western Downs region of Queensland. It was registered in November 2022 and originally covered 2,211 hectares, although a variation in October 2025 saw some specific areas removed from the project.
The Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology involves increasing the amount of carbon stored in agricultural soils by changing land management practices. This method calculates carbon abatement by using a combination of direct soil measurements and verified models. For this specific project, the project activities involve altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.
The Western Downs area is renowned as prime agricultural land, heavily utilised for cattle grazing and cropping. Dalby, the closest major town, is home to the second-largest cattle saleyards in Australia, highlighting the regional focus on beef production. The local environment is characterised by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall that averages around 600-800mm annually. Soils in the Western Downs are predominantly highly fertile Vertosols (cracking clays) and texture-contrast Chromosols, which support extensive pasture and agricultural systems.
This project was established to actively manage grazing patterns to benefit the soil ecosystem. Interestingly, the project proponent, CFC Cattle Company Pty Ltd (as trustee for CW Davison Family Trust), is deeply embedded in the local cattle and equine industries. They frequently breed and train performance Australian Stock Horses and Quarter Horses under the 'Ettenbar' prefix for campdrafting and challenge arenas.
