Weranga Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Weranga Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at Weranga, approximately 30km from Tara and 60km from Dalby in the Western Downs region of Queensland. It was registered in November 2022 and covers an area of 2,211.03 hectares.

Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models projects involve altering agricultural land management practices to build and store carbon in the soil. For this project, standard requirements involve baselining the soil carbon via measurement, and then altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.

The Western Downs area is well known for large-scale cattle grazing and cropping operations. The region typically experiences moderate to semi-arid average rainfall, often fluctuating around 500-600mm annually. The local soils are generally characterised by heavy cracking clays such as Vertosols, alongside Chromosols and Brigalow clays.

This project is run by the proponent CFC Cattle Company Pty Ltd (as the trustee for CW Davison Family Trust), which operates locally as an agricultural enterprise breeding cattle and horses. Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd is also involved as the project agent. Additionally, an interesting note is that a variation was made to the project on 15 October 2025, which saw specific listed areas of land removed from the initial project boundaries.
