Blewett Carbon Project 4
ERF176353
Project Information:
Blewett Carbon Project 4 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Western Downs region of Queensland. The project area covers approximately 235 hectares and is situated roughly 40 kilometres west of Moonie and 25 kilometres east of Westmar, just off the Moonie Highway. Registered on December 9, 2022, this project is part of a series of carbon projects (including Blewett Carbon Project 5) developed by the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, likely across an aggregated agricultural holding.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This high-integrity methodology requires the proponent to physically measure soil carbon levels through baseline and subsequent soil core sampling to verify sequestration. The project activities aim to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) by altering land management practices; specifically, the project design involves adjusting stocking rates, duration, or intensity of grazing, and establishing permanent pasture on land that was previously cropped or fallow. These activities are designed to improve ground cover and soil health, thereby increasing the soil's capacity to store carbon.
Environmentally, the Western Downs region is characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 500mm to 600mm, which is summer-dominant. The landscape in this area, situated within the Brigalow Belt South bioregion, typically features fertile clay soils (Vertosols), often referred to as cracking clays or "black earth," as well as texture-contrast soils (Chromosols). These clay-heavy soils are generally considered favourable for soil carbon projects due to their ability to protect and store organic matter when managed correctly. The region is predominantly used for grazing cattle and sheep, alongside broadacre cropping of wheat, sorghum, and cotton.
