Project Information:

Engage Carbon Abbot Point is a Land and Sea Transport project located at the Port of Abbot Point, approximately 25km north-west of Bowen in Queensland. Registered in August 2022, the project does not occupy a traditional land area but rather covers the operational footprint of marine vessels within the port's harbour.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Land and Sea Transport) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits emissions reductions achieved by lowering the emissions intensity of transport services. For this specific project, the proponent, Engage Marine, generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by implementing operational and behavioural changes to their fleet of harbour tugs. These changes typically include optimizing vessel speed, improving scheduling efficiency, and utilizing real-time data to reduce fuel consumption during towage operations.

Abbot Point is a major deepwater coal export terminal situated in the dry tropics region of North Queensland. While the immediate project environment is the marine harbour, the surrounding terrestrial region is characterized by coastal flats used primarily for grazing and industrial infrastructure. The area experiences a distinct wet and dry season typical of the Whitsunday region.

Engage Marine commenced towage operations at Abbot Point in October 2021 after securing a new license. As part of this transition, they introduced three new highly efficient Damen ASD 3212 tugs, the Engage Rogue, Engage Raider, and Engage Rebel. Engage Marine has been recognized as the first towage company in Australia to have an emissions reduction project registered under the Emissions Reduction Fund, highlighting a strategic shift toward carbon-neutral maritime services.
