Landari Tasmania Ben Nevis

Project Information:
Landari Tasmania Ben Nevis is a plantation forestry project located on the western flanks of the Ben Nevis mountain, approximately 35 kilometers east of Launceston in northeast Tasmania. Registered in June 2023, the project covers an area of 230 hectares. The region is a significant hub for both forestry and agriculture, characterized by a mix of native regrowth forests, hardwood plantations, and grazing land for cattle and sheep.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it utilizes the "avoided conversion" project activity (Schedule 3). This methodology allows landholders to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by committing to maintain an existing plantation forest that was otherwise scheduled to be cleared and converted into non-forested land, such as pasture for grazing or cropping. By retaining the trees, the project safeguards the stored carbon and continues to sequester CO2 through ongoing growth.
Environmentally, the Ben Nevis area is situated in a high-rainfall zone, influenced by its elevation (the mountain peak reaches over 1,300 meters). The terrain typically features moderately steep slopes with stable soils, often including productive Ferrosols (red volcanic soils) or texture-contrast soils derived from the region's complex geology of dolerite and sedimentary rock. These conditions are highly favourable for rapid tree growth, supporting high-quality stands of Eucalyptus species and Pinus radiata.
An interesting aspect of this project is its likely connection to a broader agricultural enterprise managed by Stephen Creese, a prominent Tasmanian landowner mentioned in forestry case studies regarding the Ben Nevis property. These studies highlight the integration of carbon farming with traditional timber production and agriculture, where parts of the estate are managed for veneer and sawlogs while others are transitioned or maintained for carbon sequestration. The project developer, Landari Pty Ltd, specializes in forestry carbon and biodiversity offsets, often facilitating projects that bridge commercial timber operations and carbon markets.
