Landari Tasmania Ben Nevis
ERF175810
Project Information:
Landari Tasmania Ben Nevis is a plantation forestry project located in the expansive forestry region of North East Tasmania, approximately 40 kilometers east of Launceston. Registered in June 2023, the project covers 230 hectares near the foothills of the Ben Nevis mountain, a prominent peak in the North East Highlands. The surrounding landscape is dominated by a mix of commercial timber plantations, native forest reserves, and grazing properties, reflecting the region's status as a key hub for the Tasmanian timber industry.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically focusing on the "avoided conversion" activity. This methodology credits projects for retaining established plantation forests that were at imminent risk of being cleared and converted to non-forested land uses, such as agriculture. By committing to maintain the plantation for a defined permanence period, the project secures carbon stored in the trees that would otherwise have been released through harvesting and land clearing.
Environmentally, the Ben Nevis region experiences a cool-temperate climate with high annual rainfall, conditions that are ideal for vigorous tree growth. The soils in this part of Tasmania are typically varied, often featuring fertile Ferrosols (red volcanic soils) or granitic loams which support high-yield forestry. The proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a specialized developer founded by experienced foresters, focusing on carbon and biodiversity offsets within the traditional forestry sector.
