Walsh Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Walsh Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located near Coutts Crossing, approximately 15 kilometres south of Grafton in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Registered in July 2022, the project covers a relatively small project area of 83.36 hectares. The surrounding Clarence Valley region is well-known for beef cattle grazing, dairy farming, and forestry, supported by a subtropical climate with high annual rainfall averaging over 1,000mm. The local terrain typically features heavy alluvial soils on creek flats transitioning to lighter podzolic or sandy soils on ridges, creating a productive environment for pasture-based agriculture.

Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), the project aims to sequester carbon by modifying land management practices to boost soil organic matter. Specifically, the project activities involve altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. By optimizing these grazing pressures, the proponent aims to increase soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health, which facilitates the drawdown of atmospheric carbon into the soil profile. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector known for facilitating participation for smaller to medium-sized landholders.
