Messner Carbon Project 11

Project Information:

Messner Carbon Project 11 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Shire of Westonia in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 316km east of Perth. It was registered in June 2022 and originally covered 448.29 hectares.

Soil carbon projects under the Measurement and Models methodology involve implementing new or materially different agricultural management practices to increase soil organic carbon. Standard requirements include rigorous baseline soil sampling to establish existing carbon levels before the new activities commence, followed by periodic measurements and modeling to verify the amount of carbon sequestered over the project's crediting period.

The Westonia area is heavily characterized by agricultural land use, primarily broadacre winter cereal cropping (such as wheat) rotated with sheep grazing. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with semi-arid, low rainfall (averaging roughly 330mm annually), and typical soils feature sandy or gravelly lateritic uplands alongside heavier valley loams and clays.

This project aims to increase carbon in the agricultural soil system by applying nutrients in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address a material deficiency. Notably, on December 4, 2025, a variation was applied to the project which removed some of the originally listed land areas. The project is managed by AgriProve, a project developer known for partnering with farmers to implement regenerative practices and utilizing digital platforms and financing models to streamline the intensive soil sampling process.
