Messner Carbon Project 11
ERF175461
Project Information:
Messner Carbon Project 11 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 50km northeast of the town of Nungarin and 60km north of Westonia. Registered on June 20, 2022, the project covers a project area of 448.29 hectares.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This method rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks through changes in land management. Unlike tree planting projects, this approach focuses on building carbon within the soil profile itself. The specific activity cited for this project involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies, thereby increasing biomass production and subsequent carbon flows into the soil.
The surrounding region is typical of the eastern Wheatbelt, characterized by broadacre cropping and grazing activities. The climate is semi-arid with low annual rainfall (historically averaging 300-350mm), and the landscape is dominated by ancient, deeply weathered soils, commonly sandy loams or duplex soils (sand over clay) which are often phosphorus-deficient in their native state.
This project appears to be part of a larger portfolio of "Messner" carbon projects managed by the proponent, Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd. Records indicate a variation to the project area occurred on December 4, 2025, where certain areas were removed from the project boundary.
