J&J Grazing Soil Carbon Project
ERF174976
Project Information:
J&J Grazing Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 12km east of the rural town of Baralaba in Central Queensland. Registered in July 2022, the project covers nearly 1,960 hectares within the Banana Shire, a region predominantly known for beef cattle grazing and dryland cropping.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This framework awards Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for measurable increases in soil organic carbon stocks achieved through new land management practices. Unlike vegetation methods that rely on biomass growth, this methodology requires rigorous physical soil sampling to establish a baseline and verify subsequent carbon storage. To drive this sequestration, the proponent, J&J Grazing Co Pty Ltd, has undertaken activities including the application of nutrients (fertilizer) to address soil deficiencies, the introduction of legume species to pasture systems, and the alteration of grazing intensity to improve soil cover and health.
Environmentally, the Baralaba area sits within the Dawson Valley and experiences a sub-tropical, semi-arid climate with summer-dominant rainfall averaging between 600mm and 700mm annually. The landscape is characterized by fertile clay (Vertosol) and loam soils, which are generally highly responsive to the pasture improvement techniques employed by the project. The project is supported by Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, a prominent aggregator and service provider in the Australian soil carbon sector.
