Project Information:

Bannogher Creek Riverine Chenopod Woodland Carbon + Biodiversity ID 1203 is an environmental planting project located in the Loddon Shire of northern Victoria, approximately 30km south of Kerang and 20km northeast of Boort. Registered in December 2022, the project covers 310 hectares of land that was previously used for agricultural purposes, such as grazing or cropping, for at least five years prior to commencement.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology. This involves establishing permanent native forests on cleared land using species local to the area. For this specific site, the project targets the restoration of "Riverine Chenopod Woodland" (Ecological Vegetation Class 103), a vegetation community classified as depleted or endangered in the region. This type of woodland typically features an overstorey of Black Box (Eucalyptus largiflorens) and a diverse understorey of salt-tolerant shrubs (chenopods) like saltbush and bluebush.

The region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 370mm. The landscape consists of riverine plains with heavy clay or grey silty soils, often associated with the floodplains of the Loddon River system. These soils are naturally fertile but can be prone to sodicity and compaction. As a participant in the Australian Government’s Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot (indicated by the "ID 1203" designation), the project generates carbon credits while simultaneously delivering verified biodiversity improvements by restoring this threatened habitat.
