Guilfoyle Carbon Project 6

ERF173775

Project Information:

Guilfoyle Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 15km northeast of Birchip in the Mallee region of Victoria. Registered in September 2022, the project covers 258 hectares near the localities of Watchupga and Curyo. The area is dominated by broadacre agriculture, specifically dryland cropping (cereals and pulses) and sheep grazing.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires landholders to implement new management activities to build soil carbon stocks, which are measured via soil core sampling and modelling over time. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilisers to address nutrient deficiencies, retaining crop stubble to protect topsoil, and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices.

The environment in this part of the Southern Mallee is semi-arid with an average annual rainfall of approximately 370mm. Soils in the region are typically Calcarosols (Mallee loams) or cracking clays (Vertosols), which can be productive but often face constraints such as subsoil salinity or compaction. The project appears to be part of a larger aggregation of projects managed by Agriprove for the Guilfoyle family or property, as indicated by the existence of sequentially numbered projects (e.g., Guilfoyle Carbon Project 5) in the same vicinity.
