Brockman Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Brockman Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the rural locality of Wootton, approximately 25 kilometers north-east of Bulahdelah in the Mid-Coast region of New South Wales. Registered on June 17, 2022, the project covers an area of roughly 84 hectares. The surrounding region is characterized by rolling coastal hinterland, primarily utilized for beef cattle grazing and forestry operations.

This project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" (2021) methodology. This method credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. It typically requires baseline soil sampling to establish current carbon levels, followed by the implementation of new activities designed to boost plant growth and carbon storage, with subsequent rounds of sampling to verify the increase.

The Wootton area lies in a high-rainfall zone, with annual averages frequently exceeding 1,100mm, supporting lush pasture growth year-round. The soils in this coastal hinterland are typically Dermosols or Chromosols, which can often be naturally acidic or nutrient-leached. This environmental context aligns with the project's specific management activity: applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizer to address material soil deficiencies. By correcting these nutrient gaps, the project aims to stimulate pasture biomass production, thereby increasing the deposit of carbon into the soil through root exudates and organic matter decomposition.
