Blackwood Biodiversity and Carbon Project

Project Information:

Blackwood Biodiversity and Carbon Project is an Environmental planting project located in the Southern Grampians Shire, approximately 8 to 10 kilometers northeast of the township of Penshurst in Victoria. It was registered in May 2022 and covers 181.23 hectares.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing and maintaining a permanent mix of native or Mallee tree species. A standard requirement for these methodology determinations is maintaining a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare. These plantings are designed to restore native forest cover and must not be harvested.

The Penshurst and greater Southern Grampians region is widely known for broad-acre primary production, particularly fine wool sheep, prime lamb grazing, and large-scale grain cropping. The area sits within Victoria's reliable high-rainfall zone, generally receiving upwards of 600-700mm of annual rainfall. The local environment is characterised by highly productive but heavy soils, including clay loams with basalt influences, Sodosols, and Chromosols common to the Victorian Volcanic Plains.

This project aims to establish permanent plantings of locally native tree species on land that was predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years before the project commenced. In November 2025, the project varied its method from the 2014 Methodology Determination to the updated 2024 Determination, which typically allows projects to leverage modern FullCAM modeling and updated measurement standards.
