Swanvale Regeneration Project

Project Information:

Swanvale Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located approximately 40km east of Jundah in the Barcoo Shire of Central West Queensland. It was registered in May 2022 and covers an expansive project area of 63,798.92 hectares.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve establishing permanent, even-aged native forests by assisting regeneration from in-situ seed sources, such as rootstock and lignotubers. The methodology mandates that the land must have been previously cleared of vegetation, and that natural regrowth was actively suppressed for at least 10 years before the project commenced. To achieve this regeneration, the primary project activity involves carefully managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing to allow young native trees to survive and eventually reach a mature forest canopy.

The Barcoo Shire region is known predominantly for large-scale cattle and sheep grazing operations across sprawling pastoral stations. The environment is characterised by a semi-arid climate with low and highly variable rainfall. Regional soil types typically alternate between red sandy earth, alluvial clay plains (Mitchell grass downs), and stony ridges or "jump-ups" (such as the nearby Swanvale Lookout).

The project is operated by Central West Livestock Pty Ltd as trustee for the Magoffin Family Trust, with Climate Friendly Pty Ltd acting as the project agent. The proponent successfully secured an Optional Delivery carbon abatement contract (CAC381483) with the Clean Energy Regulator during the March 2023 auction, originally committing 161,690 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) over a 10-year delivery period.
