Swanvale Regeneration Project

Project Information:
Swanvale Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located on the "Swanvale" pastoral station, approximately 30km south of the township of Stonehenge and 155km southwest of the major service centre of Longreach in Central West Queensland. Registered in May 2022, the project encompasses a significant land area of 63,799 hectares within the Barcoo Shire. The region is characterized by the stark beauty of the "Channel Country," known for its vast grazing properties and distinctive geological features.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves changing land management practices to facilitate the regeneration of native forests. In this specific context, the proponent, Central West Livestock Pty Ltd (trustee for the Magoffin Family Trust), manages the timing and extent of livestock grazing to reduce suppression of native vegetation. This allows species such as Mulga (Acacia aneura) and Gidyea (Acacia cambagei) to regenerate from in-situ seed sources and rootstock, eventually achieving "forest cover" status (20% canopy cover at 2 metres height).
Environmentally, the Swanvale area is semi-arid with a summer-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging between 300mm and 400mm annually, though highly variable. The landscape is defined by a mix of soil types and topographies; the property features the "Swanvale Jump-up," a lateritic escarpment with skeletal soils and spinifex, which transitions into undulating plains featuring red earths and clay soils typical of the region's grazing lands.
A notable feature of the property is the "Swanvale Lookout," a public tourist attraction located on the crest of the jump-up along the road between Stonehenge and Jundah. It offers panoramic views of the Swanvale Fault and the surrounding station country. The Magoffin family, who operate the project, have long-standing ties to the district, with historical connections dating back to the early settlement and mining eras of the region.
