Project Information:

Snowy River Forestry - Project 2200 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 16km south of Berridale, in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales. Registered in September 2022, the project covers a land area of roughly 132 hectares. The site is situated near the Monaro Highway, in a corridor that connects the grazing plains of the Monaro to the alpine region of Jindabyne.

The project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology. Unlike environmental planting projects which are designed to be permanent forests, this methodology allows for the commercial harvesting of timber. Carbon credits (ACCUs) are issued based on the long-term average carbon stock of the plantation, accounting for the cycles of growth, harvest, and replanting. This specific project involves establishing a new plantation on land that has not supported a forest for at least seven years, contributing to the region's sustainable timber supply while sequestering carbon.

The local environment of the Monaro Tablelands is characterized by a "rain shadow" effect, resulting in a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 500mm to 600mm, significantly drier than the nearby Snowy Mountains. The terrain consists of rolling treeless plains with soils that are predominantly granite-derived sandy loams, though pockets of basalt soil can be found in the region. Traditionally, this area is heavily utilized for Merino sheep grazing and beef cattle production.
