McEwan Carbon Project 2

Project Information:

McEwan Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the agricultural township of Pinnaroo. Registered in April 2022, the project covers a land area of roughly 672 hectares. The region is predominantly utilized for dryland cropping, specifically cereals like wheat and barley, and livestock grazing, typical of the broader Mallee agricultural zone.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which incentivizes changes in land management to store carbon in the soil. To achieve this, the proponent, Agriprove Solutions, works with the landholder to implement regenerative activities such as retaining crop stubble, converting to reduced or no-tillage practices to minimize soil disturbance, and applying specific synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies. These actions are designed to improve soil health and increase organic carbon stocks, which are then quantified using a hybrid system of physical soil sampling and modelling.

The environment in this part of the Murray Mallee is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall between 300mm and 350mm. The landscape typically features dune-swale systems with soil types ranging from sandy loams on the flats to deep siliceous sands on the dunes. The "Project 2" designation suggests this may be an expansion of an existing carbon farming initiative by the McEwan family or entity in the district.
