Whitlam Carbon Project 5
ERF172148
Project Information:
Whitlam Carbon Project 5 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Upper South East region of South Australia, roughly 25 to 30 kilometers west of the rural service town of Tintinara. Registered in April 2022, the project covers a land area of approximately 324 hectares within the Coorong District Council local government area.
The surrounding region is characterized by a "cold semi-arid" climate with an average annual rainfall between 390mm and 450mm. The landscape typically consists of sandy loams over clay or limestone, a soil profile common to the Coorong district but often susceptible to acidity and wind erosion. Land use in this area is predominantly mixed farming, combining dryland cropping (cereals, legumes) with livestock grazing (sheep and cattle) and lucerne seed production.
Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, this project generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by measuring increases in soil organic carbon compared to a baseline. To achieve this, the project proponent, Agriprove Solutions, works with the landholder to implement new management activities designed to boost soil health. For this specific project, these activities include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, retaining crop stubble to protect topsoil, and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices.
