Grassby Carbon Project 6

Project Information:
Grassby Carbon Project 6 is a soil carbon sequestration project located near Caltowie, approximately 15km west of Jamestown in the Mid North region of South Australia. Registered in May 2022, the project covers a land area of roughly 225 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly used for mixed farming, combining cereal cropping with sheep and cattle grazing, typical of the Northern Areas Council district.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon stocks through changes in land management. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, establishing new pasture on previously cropped or fallow land, and altering grazing intensity to improve vegetation cover. These actions are designed to boost biomass production and soil health, thereby sequestering more carbon in the soil profile.
Environmentally, the site experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The area typically receives an annual rainfall of approximately 400-500mm. The soils in this part of the Mid North are generally characterized as red-brown clay loams or calcareous earths, which are fertile but can be susceptible to erosion if ground cover is not maintained. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.
