Braidwood Regeneration Project

Project Information:

The Braidwood Regeneration Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located on Braidwood Station, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of the township of Jundah in Central West Queensland. Registered on July 4, 2022, the project encompasses a substantial area of 112,611 hectares within the Barcoo Shire. The proponent, Braidwood Investments (WA) Pty Ltd, is acting as Trustee for the Bowler Trust.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects focus on restoring native forest cover on land where vegetation has previously been suppressed, typically by agricultural activities. For this specific project, the regeneration is achieved by managing the timing and extent of grazing by livestock. This change in land management allows native species, likely Gidgee, Mulga, or Coolibah, to regenerate from in-situ seed sources and rootstock, eventually reaching forest cover status (at least 2 meters in height with 20% canopy cover).

The Jundah region is characterized by a semi-arid to arid climate with highly variable rainfall, averaging between 250mm and 300mm annually. The landscape is part of the "Channel Country," known for its complex system of river channels and floodplains. The soil composition in this area typically consists of cracking clay soils (Vertosols) in the floodplains and red massive earths (Kandosols) on the surrounding hard ridge country. The primary land use in this remote region is extensive cattle and sheep grazing, which aligns with the project's activity of modifying grazing pressure to support carbon sequestration.

An interesting facet of this project is the connection between the Western Australian proponent and this Queensland property. Public records link the proponent, directed by Peter Bowler, to the acquisition of this pastoral lease in early 2023. As of the latest data, the project has been issued 9,540 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). notably, zero units have been sold to the Commonwealth under contract, suggesting the proponent may be holding the credits or trading them on the spot market.
