Wyemo Biogas Project

Project Information:

Wyemo Biogas Project is an animal effluent management project located approximately 25km southwest of Warwick in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. It was registered in May 2022 and covers an unknown project area size.

Animal effluent management projects typically involve capturing the methane-rich biogas generated by decomposing agricultural waste and combusting it. Under standard methodology requirements, projects must actively collect the effluent-derived methane and pass it through an emissions destruction treatment facility, such as a flare or a biogas engine. This process prevents methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, from freely entering the atmosphere by converting it into less harmful carbon dioxide.

The Darling Downs area is well known for intensive agriculture, including broadacre cropping, cattle farming, and commercial piggeries. The regional environment generally experiences a sub-humid climate with moderate, summer-dominant rainfall, and the local soils are predominantly deep, fertile black clays alongside some loamy plains.

This project collects and combusts methane generated from animal effluent at a newly constructed emissions destruction facility. Interestingly, the proponent, Cefn Energy Pty Ltd, is part of the CEFN group. CEFN is an independent, family-owned agricultural business established in 1940 that stands as one of the largest pork producers in Australia. This carbon project directly supports their environmental sustainability goals by treating the effluent produced at their regional piggery operations.
