Scott Carbon Project 3

Scott Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, situated approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Lucindale and 25 kilometers northwest of Naracoorte. The project was registered on March 25, 2022, and covers a project area of 243.57 hectares. The surrounding region is a significant agricultural hub known for high-productivity grazing (sheep and cattle) and cropping, supported by reliable groundwater and favorable climatic conditions.

This project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. This high-integrity methodology allows landholders to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by implementing new management activities that increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. To generate credits, the project proponent must demonstrate a measurable increase in soil carbon stocks relative to a baseline, verified through physical soil sampling and modelling.

The environmental setting for Scott Carbon Project 3 is typical of the Upper South East, featuring a Mediterranean climate with winter-dominant rainfall averaging between 550mm and 600mm annually. The local soil profiles are characteristic of the Limestone Coast, often consisting of sandy loams or "Terra Rossa" (red clay loam) overlaying limestone and calcrete. These soils are generally well-drained and highly responsive to nutrient management.

Specific activities for this project involve applying nutrients to the land in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material soil deficiencies. By optimizing soil fertility, the project aims to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn drives the sequestration of carbon into the soil profile.
