McMahon Carbon Project 2

Project Information:
McMahon Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara District of South Australia, approximately 25km southwest of Bordertown and near the locality of Western Flat. Registered in August 2022, the project spans roughly 620 hectares within the Limestone Coast region.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for increases in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) achieved through changes in land management. Specifically, this project involves addressing material nutrient deficiencies through the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers and retaining crop stubble. These activities are designed to boost plant biomass production and protect the soil surface, thereby increasing the rate at which carbon is drawn down and stored in the soil profile.
The Tatiara District, often translated from Indigenous language as "Good Country," is a prime agricultural zone known for reliable mixed farming, including cereal cropping and livestock grazing. The region typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 450mm to 500mm. The local environment is characterized by fertile soils, often consisting of loams over clay or limestone (terra rossa), which are highly responsive to the nutrient management and biomass retention strategies employed by this project.
The proponent, Agriprove Solutions, is a leading developer in the Australian soil carbon market, known for using high-tech soil sampling and remote sensing data to streamline the credit generation process. The designation "Project 2" suggests the participating landholder may have staged their enrollment or registered multiple aggregations within the region to optimize their carbon farming operations.
