Swartz Carbon Project 11

Project Information:

Swartz Carbon Project 11 is a soil carbon project located at Calliweera Farm, approximately 30km north of Rockhampton in the Fitzroy Basin region of Queensland. Registered in March 2022, this specific project covers nearly 269 hectares, forming part of a larger 2,109-hectare aggregation of 11 soil carbon projects managed by the Warnock family. The Warnock family has held the property since 1879, utilizing the region's subtropical climate and fertile soils for cattle grazing.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits measured increases in soil organic carbon stocks. To achieve this, the proponents have transitioned from set stocking to high-density rotational grazing. This shift included significant investment in fencing and water infrastructure, allowing for more intensive grazing periods followed by adequate pasture rest.

The region is characterized by summer-dominant rainfall and clay-heavy alluvial soils typical of the Fitzroy Basin. These soils have responded well to the management changes; the Swartz aggregation is notable for achieving valid carbon credits within just two years of operation, significantly faster than the industry average. Additionally, the improved soil health and vegetation cover have allowed the landholders to reportedly double their stocking rate while reducing sediment runoff.
