Project Information:

Kwinana Energy Efficiency Boiler Upgrade Project is an industrial energy efficiency project located in the Kwinana Industrial Area, approximately 40km south of Perth in Western Australia. It was registered in January 2022 and covers an unspecified area size typical of industrial facility upgrades.

Industrial and Commercial Emissions Reduction projects involve modifying, removing, or replacing existing energy-consuming equipment to reduce fuel use and emissions. Under this methodology, projects must accurately measure energy consumption before and after the upgrade to calculate the net emissions reduction and prove they go beyond business-as-usual practices. In this case, the project focuses specifically on upgrading boiler and process heat systems.

The Kwinana area is a major hub for heavy industry and commercial operations, situated on the Swan Coastal Plain. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with moderate winter rainfall, and the local soils are primarily coastal sands overlaying limestone.

An interesting note about this project is its association with the BP Kwinana site, a major facility in the area that has recently undergone significant transitions towards renewable energy. Additionally, in April 2023, the proponent, O'Brien Energy Services Pty Ltd, updated its approach by varying its project method from the older 2015 Industrial Electricity and Fuel Efficiency determination to the updated 2021 Industrial and Commercial Emissions Reduction determination.
