Sangara Carbon Farming (Revoked)
ERF167913
Project Information:
Sangara Carbon Farming is an Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth project located approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Monto in the North Burnett region of Queensland. Registered on June 24, 2022, the project covers a relatively focused area of 811 hectares. The project operates on the property known as "Sangara," which has historically been utilized for cattle grazing, a primary land use in the district. Historical records indicate the property was previously associated with the Perkins family before being acquired by the current proponent, MacLennan Cattle Co Pty Ltd.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Avoided Clearing of Native Regrowth) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits landholders for protecting native forest regrowth on land that has a history of clearing for agricultural purposes (such as grazing) and where the landholder has the legal right to clear again. By committing to retain this regrowth rather than clearing it for pasture maintenance, the project generates carbon credits. This approach allows for a "silvopastoral" system where cattle grazing can continue beneath the canopy, provided the forest cover is maintained and not mechanically cleared.
Environmentally, the North Burnett region is characterized by a sub-tropical to semi-arid climate with a summer-dominant rainfall averaging around 700mm annually. The landscape in this area, situated between Monto and Biloela, typically features soils from the Brigalow Belt, often consisting of cracking clays (Vertosols) and texture-contrast soils (Chromosols) which support both native scrub and improved pastures. The preservation of regrowth in this area contributes to biodiversity corridors and soil stability in a region heavily modified for beef production.
