Misty Mountain Carbon Project

Project Information:
Misty Mountain Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Upper Murray region of Victoria, approximately 15km northwest of the township of Corryong. Registered in June 2021, the project covers a project area of roughly 61 hectares. The site sits within the Towong Shire, a district characterised by its rugged natural beauty, proximity to the Australian Alps, and the Murray River which forms the border with New South Wales.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems) Methodology Determination 2018. This methodology credits farmers for sequestering carbon in soil by changing land management practices. In this specific case, the project focuses on re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures through seeding, which aims to increase biomass and soil organic carbon levels. To generate credits, the proponent must demonstrate a measured increase in soil carbon stock over time compared to a baseline.
The Upper Murray region is predominantly used for grazing, with beef and dairy production accounting for a significant portion of the local agricultural output. The area typically experiences high rainfall, ranging from 700mm to over 1400mm annually depending on altitude, owing to its position near the Snowy Mountains. The local soil landscape is often complex, frequently featuring acidic loams or sandy clay loams overlying heavier clay subsoils, which can present management challenges such as acidity that farmers must address to optimise carbon sequestration.
An interesting note is that the property name "Misty Mountain" appears locally in the context of both Misty Mountain Angus and holiday accommodation in the Walwa/Jingellic area, suggesting the land is part of a mixed-use agricultural enterprise common in this scenic high-country region. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.
