Project Information:

LANDARI Tasmanian Plantations 2021 is a plantation forestry project situated across two distinct regions in northern Tasmania. The project area spans approximately 672 hectares and is split between sites near Western Creek in the Meander Valley (about 55km southwest of Launceston) and the Ringarooma area in the northeast (about 80km northeast of Launceston). Registered in May 2021, the project operates within the productive forestry landscapes of the Northern Midlands and Break O'Day local government areas, regions heavily utilized for commercial timber production and grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology, specifically utilizing the schedule for converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation plantations. This activity involves altering the management of a forest, originally planted for short-term harvest cycles like pulpwood (typically 10-15 years), to a longer cycle suitable for sawlogs (typically 25+ years). By extending the growth period and performing silvicultural interventions like thinning and pruning, the trees grow larger and store carbon for longer periods compared to the original baseline scenario.

Both project locations benefit from Tasmania's cool temperate climate and high rainfall, generally exceeding 900mm to 1000mm annually, which is ideal for rapid tree growth. The soils in these regions are typically fertile Ferrosols (derived from basalt) or clay-loams derived from Dolerite, both of which are characteristic of Tasmania's prime forestry land. The proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a specialist forestry and carbon management firm established by experienced foresters, managing multiple carbon estates across the state.
