Biodiverse Carbon South Australian Environmental Planting Project 2021

Project Information:
Biodiverse Carbon South Australian Environmental Planting Project 2021 is an environmental planting project located across the Ceduna and Streaky Bay local government regions on the western Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It was registered in March 2021 and originally covered an area of 810.75ha.
Environmental planting projects involve planting permanent mixed-species native trees at a density of at least 200 stems per ha to achieve full forest cover.
The western Eyre Peninsula area is known predominantly for dryland agriculture, heavily utilised for broadacre winter cropping (such as wheat, barley, and oats) alongside commercial sheep grazing operations. The environment is considered semi-arid with low and variable rainfall, typically receiving between 270mm and 380mm annually. Soils in the region are generally calcareous sandy loams and grey sandy calcareous soils, which are often nutrient-poor and prone to wind erosion.
This project establishes permanent plantings of locally native tree species on land that was predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years prior to commencement. Developed by Canopy Nature Based Solutions, a subsidiary of Greening Australia, the project focuses on delivering high-quality carbon sequestration with tangible ecosystem and biodiversity co-benefits for the Australian landscape. In February 2025, a variation was made to the project, which saw some of the originally listed areas removed from the project boundaries.
