Wonga Carbon Project

Project Information:
The Wonga Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located in the Goondiwindi region of southern Queensland. The project area sits approximately 50 kilometers northeast of the township of Goondiwindi and 30 kilometers west of Inglewood. Registered in March 2021, the project originally covered a larger footprint but was varied in March 2025 to remove certain areas, resulting in a current project area of roughly 440 hectares.
The project operates under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management. Specifically, the Wonga Carbon Project focuses on applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material soil deficiencies. By correcting these nutrient imbalances, the project aims to stimulate plant growth and root biomass, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil profile.
Regionally, the Goondiwindi area is a significant agricultural hub known for a mix of grazing (sheep and cattle) and broadacre cropping (cereals and cotton). The climate is generally classified as semi-arid to sub-tropical, characterized by hot summers and cool, dry winters, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm. The soils in this vicinity typically range from cracking clays (Vertosols) on the alluvial plains to texture-contrast soils (Sodosols) and traprock geologies in the more elevated eastern sections.
