Wilson Carbon Project

Project Information:

Wilson Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the rural locality of Ombersley, approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Winchelsea in Victoria. Registered in November 2020, the project operates across a substantial area of roughly 1,250 hectares within the Surf Coast Shire.

The region surrounds the Western District of Victoria, an area traditionally utilized for mixed farming, including sheep and cattle grazing as well as cropping. The environment in this district is characterized by a moderate rainfall climate, typically receiving between 500mm and 600mm annually. The local landscape generally features basalt-derived soils, often consisting of heavy clays or clay loams consistent with the Victorian Volcanic Plain.

The project operates under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology. This framework requires the project proponent to physically sample and measure soil carbon levels to establish a baseline. By altering land management practices, specifically changing the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing in this instance, the project aims to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil profile. Credits are issued based on the measured increase in soil carbon stocks over time, rather than estimated through modelling alone.
