Jensen Carbon Project
ERF159590
Project Information:
The Jensen Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Central Highlands region of Queensland, approximately 30km southeast of the town of Clermont. Registered in October 2020, the project covers a land area of 428.12 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly utilized for beef cattle grazing and dryland cropping, characterized by open plains and scrubland.
The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative-Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology. This method involves measuring the carbon stock in the soil through physical sampling to establish a baseline. The proponent then implements new management activities, in this case, altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing, to encourage root growth and organic matter retention. Subsequent soil sampling rounds are conducted over the project's life (typically 25 years) to empirically verify increases in soil carbon, for which Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) are issued.
Environmentally, the Clermont area is classified as semi-arid to sub-tropical, receiving an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm, though this can be highly variable. The soils in this specific part of the Central Highlands are typically fertile, cracking clay soils (Vertosols) derived from basalt, which are well-suited for soil carbon projects due to their high capacity for holding organic carbon compared to sandy soils. The project is managed by AgriProve Solutions, Australia's largest developer of soil carbon projects, who partner with landholders to streamline the complex administrative and sampling requirements of the scheme.
