Pimpara Native Forest Protection Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

Pimpara Native Forest Protection Project (Revoked) was an Avoided Deforestation project located at Pimpara Station, approximately 170km north of Broken Hill in the Far West region of New South Wales. Registered in November 2020, the project covered a substantial area of 43,819 hectares. The region is defined by its remote, semi-arid rangelands, primarily utilised for extensive grazing of sheep and cattle. The local environment features the iconic red sandy loam soils, dune fields, and claypans typical of the NSW "Corner Country", supporting vegetation such as Mulga and other native scrub species adapted to low, variable rainfall.

The project operated under the Avoided Deforestation 1.1 methodology. This specific project type requires the landholder to hold a clearing permit that was issued before 1 July 2010, implying that the land would have historically been cleared for agriculture (cropping or grazing) in the absence of the carbon project. By voluntarily surrendering the right to clear this native forest, the project generates credits for the avoided emissions.

On 12 December 2023, the project was revoked under section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015. Section 30 governs voluntary revocation upon application by the proponent, indicating that the project developer, Terra Carbon Pty Limited (a subsidiary of the GreenCollar Group), chose to withdraw the project from the scheme. This occurred in the wake of the 2023 Independent Review of Australian Carbon Credit Units, which led to the sunsetting of the Avoided Deforestation method for new entrants due to concerns regarding additionality, although existing projects were technically permitted to continue.
