Project Information:

Western Australia Rangelands Conservation Initiative Site #7 is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, approximately 100km southeast of Carnarvon. It was registered in August 2020 and covers an expansive 145,673.07 hectares.

Human-Induced Regeneration projects involve restoring native forests by changing land management practices. These projects facilitate the regeneration of native trees from in-situ seed sources, rootstock, and lignotubers to establish permanent, even-aged native forests.

The Gascoyne region is heavily characterised by extensive pastoralism, with cattle and sheep grazing being the primary land use across roughly 75% of the area's sprawling stations. The environment features an arid to semi-arid climate, receiving highly variable rainfall averaging around 200mm annually. The regional soils are largely dominated by tenosols (sandy red earths), sodosols, and kandosols.

This project was established on land previously cleared of vegetation where regrowth had been actively suppressed for at least 10 years. To enable forest regeneration, the project activities include the humane management of feral animals and carefully controlling the timing and extent of livestock grazing. The proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, is a trading entity of the GreenCollar Group, one of Australia's largest environmental market investors, which partners with landholders to integrate native forest protection and carbon sequestration within productive agricultural properties.
