McClean Carbon Project

Project Information:
McClean Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at North Mihi near Uralla, approximately 25km south-west of Armidale in the Northern Tablelands region of NSW. It was registered in November 2020 and covers 402.22 ha.
Projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration Using Measurement and Models methodology involve baseline measurement of soil carbon followed by management changes to increase long-term carbon sequestration. The McClean Carbon Project achieves this by altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health. In March 2025, the project varied its method from the older 2018 measurement standard to this newer 2021 measurement-and-models method.
The Uralla area is well known for broadacre grazing and livestock production. The region generally experiences a temperate climate with reliable high rainfall, averaging around 780mm annually, and features soils primarily consisting of granite, trap, and basalt types.
Over more than a decade, the property has undergone major operational shifts, replacing synthetic fertilisers with composted organic matter and expanding from 15 paddocks to nearly 70 subdivisions to support controlled grazing. This biological farming approach has visibly improved the farm's resilience to extreme weather conditions, culminating in the issuance of 5,012 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) in May 2026.
