'Thomson Carbon Project

Thomson Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 16km south-west of Miriam Vale in Central Queensland. It was registered in October 2020 and covers approximately 206ha.

Soil carbon sequestration projects under the 2018 methodology involve undertaking new and eligible agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. This requires rigorous baseline soil sampling and subsequent laboratory testing over time to measure and verify the actual carbon drawdown.

The Miriam Vale and broader Central Queensland area is well known for beef cattle grazing, pastoral farming, and forestry operations. The region experiences a subtropical climate classified by moderate to high rainfall, and the soils are typically a mix of dermosols, chromosols, and clay loams which successfully support strong pasture growth.

This project specifically focuses on increasing carbon in the agricultural soil system by altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. By carefully rotating and managing cattle movements, the pastures are given time to recover, which improves root mass and draws more organic carbon into the soil profile. The project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, a major developer of agricultural soil carbon projects across Australia.
