Thomson Carbon Project

The Thomson Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Miriam Vale region, approximately 70km southeast of Gladstone and just south of the township of Miriam Vale in Queensland. Registered in October 2020, the project encompasses an area of 205.8 hectares. The surrounding region is predominantly utilized for cattle grazing and mixed farming, situated within the Gladstone Regional Council area (formerly Miriam Vale Shire).

Operated under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, this project seeks to increase soil organic carbon levels by modifying agricultural management practices. Specifically, the project involves altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. This often entails shifting from continuous grazing to time-controlled or rotational grazing systems, which allows pastures to recover, promotes deeper root growth, and ultimately sequesters more atmospheric carbon into the soil profile.

The environment in the Miriam Vale district is characterized by a subtropical climate with a relatively high mean annual rainfall of approximately 1,120mm, which is summer-dominant. The local terrain typically features yellow gradational soils (Dermosols) and sodic duplex soils (Sodosols), which can be prone to erosion if vegetation cover is not maintained. The project is managed by AgriProve Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector known for partnering with landholders to implement regenerative grazing techniques.
