Fisher Carbon Project
ERF157672
Project Information:
Fisher Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Mackay region of Queensland, approximately 13km south of the town of Sarina and 10km north of Koumala. Registered in September 2020, the project covers 478 hectares of agricultural land situated just west of the Bruce Highway.
The project operates under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Specifically, this project aims to sequester carbon by altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. This approach is designed to improve ground cover and soil health, thereby drawing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil profile.
The Sarina and Koumala region is characterized by a high-rainfall tropical climate, often exceeding 1,500mm annually, which supports robust pasture growth essential for soil carbon build-up. The local landscape is a mix of intensive sugar cane cultivation on the coastal flats and cattle grazing in the undulating hinterland. Soils in this area are typically fertile Dermosols or Vertosols (cracking clays), which are well-suited to the project's grazing activities.
This project is managed by Agriprove Solutions, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon market. By focusing on grazing management in a high-rainfall zone, the project leverages the region's rapid vegetation growth rates to potentially accelerate soil carbon sequestration compared to drier inland projects.
