Fisher Carbon Project

The Fisher Carbon Project (ERF157672) is a soil carbon sequestration project located near Koumala, approximately 20km south of Sarina and 50km south of Mackay on the Central Queensland coast. Registered in September 2020, the project covers 478.78 hectares of agricultural land. The region is predominantly known for beef cattle grazing and sugar cane production, with the project area itself situated in a high-rainfall coastal zone typical of the Whitsunday region.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems) Methodology Determination 2018. This methodology rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Specific activities for this project include altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing, designed to improve pasture health and root density, thereby sequestering more atmospheric carbon into the soil.

Environmentally, the Koumala region is characterized by a wet tropical/sub-tropical climate with a high average annual rainfall of approximately 1500mm, concentrated in the summer months. The local terrain typically features alluvial clay loams on flats and podzolic soils on ridges, which are well-suited for high-biomass pasture growth when managed effectively. The project is facilitated by Agriprove Solutions, a major service provider in the Australian soil carbon sector.
