Wilmot Cattle Co. Carbon Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Wilmot Cattle Co. Carbon Project (Revoked) was a soil carbon sequestration project located on the "Morocco" property in Kelvin, approximately 30km northeast of Gunnedah in New South Wales. Registered in September 2020 and covering an area of 1,481 hectares, the project was part of the portfolio of Wilmot Cattle Co (owned by the Macdoch Ag Group), a company widely recognised for executing a pioneering private carbon credit deal with Microsoft on its other properties.

The project operated under the 2018 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits increases in soil organic carbon stocks achieved through management changes. The project activities at Morocco included altering stocking rates to time-controlled rotational grazing, converting intensive tillage to reduced tillage, and rejuvenating pastures to increase biomass. These regenerative practices are designed to improve ground cover and water retention, thereby sequestering carbon in the soil profile.

The Gunnedah and Liverpool Plains region is renowned for its agricultural productivity, supporting a mix of cattle grazing and cropping. The "Morocco" property features a landscape of basalt and clay soils, typical of the North West Slopes, and experiences a summer-dominant rainfall of approximately 650mm annually. Unlike Wilmot Cattle Co's other properties (Wilmot and Woodburn) which sold credits into the voluntary market via the Regen Network, this project was initially established under the Australian Government's ERF scheme. Its revocation in December 2024 suggests a potential strategic pivot, possibly to align the property with the proponent's preference for private voluntary markets or due to a change in land tenure.
