Higgins Carbon Project (Revoked)

Project Information:
The Higgins Carbon Project (Revoked) was a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Maranoa region of Queensland, approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Wallumbilla and 80 kilometers east of Roma. Registered in June 2020 by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, the project covered an area of 1,332 hectares. However, the project was voluntarily revoked on September 5, 2025, under section 30 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015.
The project operated under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology. This method credits farmers for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management activities. In this specific case, the project focused on re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures by seeding. The goal was to improve pasture density and root depth, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil profile.
The Maranoa region is a significant agricultural hub characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate with annual rainfall typically between 600mm and 800mm. The land use in the surrounding area is predominantly grazing for cattle and sheep, alongside cropping of wheat and sorghum. The soils in this district often include fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) and texture-contrast soils (Chromosols), which are generally suitable for the pasture improvements proposed by the project.
A notable aspect of this project is its recent revocation status. Being revoked under section 30 implies the proponent voluntarily requested the project be cancelled. This can occur for various reasons, such as a strategic decision to aggregate the land into a larger project, a change in land ownership, or a determination that the project was not meeting its sequestration targets. As the "permanence period" (the mandatory time carbon must remain stored) had not yet commenced, the project likely did not issue a significant volume of carbon credits before its cancellation.
