Higgins Carbon Project (Revoked)

Project Information:
Higgins Carbon Project (Revoked) was a soil carbon project located in the Maranoa region of Queensland, approximately 35km northeast of the town of Wallumbilla and north of Yuleba. Registered in June 2020, the project covered 1,332 hectares of agricultural land. The project was managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd, a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.
The project operated under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems (2018) methodology. This method rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management. Specifically, this project focused on "re-establishing or rejuvenating a pasture by seeding." By introducing new pasture species, likely legumes or deep-rooted grasses, the project aimed to increase biomass production and root depth, thereby sequestering more atmospheric carbon into the soil profile compared to the baseline management.
The Maranoa region is characterized by a semi-arid to sub-tropical climate, with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm, though this can be highly variable. The landscape typically supports cattle grazing and some cropping. Soils in the area often consist of fertile cracking clays (Vertosols) and texture-contrast soils (Chromosols), which are common in the Brigalow Belt bioregion. These soil types generally have a high capacity for carbon storage when managed effectively, though they can be susceptible to erosion if vegetation cover is lost.
On September 5, 2025, the project was voluntarily revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. This section of the rule allows a proponent to request the revocation of a project declaration. Voluntary revocation often occurs when a landholder decides to sell the property, changes their strategic direction, or determines that the project is no longer commercially viable before credits are issued.
