North West Queensland Conservation Initiative Site #1 (Revoked)
ERF154611
Project Information:
North West Queensland Conservation Initiative Site #1 (Revoked) was a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the Gulf Savannah region of Queensland, approximately 75km southwest of Georgetown and east of the remote locality of Esmeralda. Registered in August 2020, the project covered a substantial area of 74,765 hectares within the Etheridge Shire. However, as of December 1, 2025, the project was revoked under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which typically indicates that the proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited, voluntarily applied to cancel the project's registration.
The project operated on pastoral land primarily used for cattle grazing. The region is characterized by a dry tropical to semi-arid climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. It typically receives between 700mm and 800mm of rainfall annually, almost all of which falls during the summer monsoon months. The landscape features open woodlands and savannahs supported by soils that range from mottled grey earths and sandy loams on ridges to heavier clays in floodplain areas.
As an HIR project, the objective was to establish permanent native forests not by planting trees, but by facilitating natural regeneration. The proponent managed the timing and extent of grazing and controlled feral animals to reduce suppression pressure on the land. This allowed existing in-situ seed sources, rootstock, and lignotubers (woody swellings at the base of plants) to regrow into forest cover. The project appears to have been part of a broader portfolio by Terra Carbon, with other "Sites" (such as Site #3 and Site #4) registered in neighboring regions like Charters Towers and the Tablelands.
