Tennyson Carbon Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Tennyson Carbon Project (Revoked) was a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 10km east of Gunning in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in October 2019, the project covered a small area of 8.93 hectares. The project was situated in a region predominantly used for grazing sheep and cattle, characterized by undulating country and scattered woodlands.

The project operated under the Measurement of Soil Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems methodology. This method requires landholders to establish a baseline of soil organic carbon through physical soil sampling. Proponents must then implement new management activities, in this case, pasture rejuvenation via seeding, to increase carbon levels. Credits (ACCUs) are issued based on measured increases in soil carbon stocks over time compared to the baseline.

Environmentally, the Gunning region typically experiences a temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm to 700mm. The soils in this area are often granite-derived loams or Red Chromosols (texture-contrast soils), which support pasture growth but can be susceptible to erosion if overgrazed.

The project was voluntarily revoked on September 23, 2025, under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. Section 30 revocations are generally initiated by the project proponent, often when a project is deemed commercially unviable or if the landholder wishes to exit the scheme. Given the very small size of the project area (under 10 hectares), the high fixed costs associated with the required soil sampling and auditing likely made the project economically challenging to maintain. The proponent, AgriProve Solutions, is a prominent developer in the Australian soil carbon sector.
