Project Information:
Catchment Conservation Alliance - Great Barrier Reef Initiative Site #9 (Revoked) was a carbon sequestration project located approximately 30km south of Bowen in Queensland. Registered in April 2019 and covering a significant area of 8,389 hectares, the project was situated within the Whitsunday Regional local government area. This region is predominantly utilized for cattle grazing and is characterized by a "Dry Tropics" climate, experiencing distinct wet summers and dry winters. The landscape in this vicinity, particularly near the Bogie River catchment, typically features duplex soils such as chromosols and sodosols, which can be prone to erosion if vegetation cover is lost.
The project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology. This method involves allowing native forests to regenerate on land where regrowth has been historically suppressed by activities such as livestock grazing or mechanical clearing. By managing the timing and extent of grazing and controlling feral animals, the project aimed to restore permanent even-aged native forests. These activities are designed to increase canopy cover to at least 20% and achieve a height of two meters, thereby sequestering carbon in the woody biomass.
Notably, this project was part of a broader portfolio by the proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited (a subsidiary of GreenCollar), known as the "Catchment Conservation Alliance." These projects often emphasize co-benefits such as improving water quality for the Great Barrier Reef by stabilizing soils and reducing sediment run-off. The project was voluntarily revoked on September 29, 2023, under Section 30 of the CFI Rule. Voluntary revocation often occurs when a proponent decides to reconfigure a project, combine it with others, or if the land is sold or management strategies change.
