Bingara Regeneration Project (Revoked)

Project Information:
The Bingara Regeneration Project (Revoked) was a carbon abatement initiative located in the remote Paroo Shire of Southwest Queensland. Situated approximately 40 kilometres west of the small township of Eulo and roughly 110 kilometres west of the regional hub of Cunnamulla, the project covered a substantial area of 75,724.59 hectares. The project was registered in November 2018 and operated for nearly six years before being revoked in June 2024.
This project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology. HIR projects are designed to regenerate permanent native forests on land where vegetation has historically been suppressed, typically by agricultural activities. To achieve this, the proponent, Merimo Pty Ltd, was required to undertake specific management activities such as the cessation of mechanical clearing, the humane control of feral animals (likely goats and pigs), and the strategic management of livestock grazing to allow native vegetation to recover and reach forest canopy standards.
The project area lies within the Mulga Lands bioregion, an area characterized by flat to undulating plains and semi-arid conditions. The region typically experiences low and variable rainfall, averaging roughly 300mm to 350mm annually, and is dominated by red earth and sandy loam soils supporting Mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands. The primary land use in this district is extensive grazing for sheep and cattle, often relying on water from the Great Artesian Basin.
The project was revoked on June 24, 2024, under Section 32 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015. A Section 32 revocation is generally a voluntary action initiated by the project proponent to revoke the project's declaration, rather than a forced revocation for non-compliance. This often occurs when a proponent wishes to exit the scheme or restructure their project.
