Project Information:
FPC 2018 CP1 is a plantation forestry project located in the South West region of Western Australia, with aggregated sites distributed across the Shires of Boyup Brook, Manjimup, and Cranbrook. The project is centered roughly 20km south of Nannup and extends to areas near Wilga and Tenterden, approximately 300km south of Perth. It was registered in July 2018 and covers a total area of approximately 2,549 hectares.
The region is a hub for the state's timber industry, alongside agricultural land uses such as viticulture, grazing, and cropping. The environmental conditions vary across the dispersed sites; the western areas near Manjimup experience high rainfall and feature fertile red-brown "karri loams" and lateritic gravels, while the eastern sites near Cranbrook are semi-arid with sandy duplex soils.
Plantation forestry projects under this methodology generate carbon credits by establishing new timber plantations or altering the management of existing ones to store carbon for longer periods. Specifically, this project involves converting existing short-rotation plantations, typically harvested quickly for woodchips, into long-rotation forests managed for sawlogs, as well as establishing new softwood plantations. This transition allows the trees to grow larger and store carbon in the wood products for decades after harvest. The project is managed by the Forest Products Commission, a Western Australian Government trading enterprise, and was formerly known as the Maringee Plantation Forestry Project before a name change in 2024.
