Project Information:
FPC 2018 CP1 is a plantation forestry project located in the South West region of Western Australia, with aggregated sites situated approximately 25km southeast of Collie and 40km east of Manjimup. Originally registered as the "Maringee Plantation Forestry Project" in July 2018, the project covers a total area of approximately 2,550 hectares. It is managed by the Forest Products Commission (FPC), the Western Australian government's trading enterprise responsible for the state's commercial forestry assets.
The project operates under the Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically utilizing the 2022 determination. It combines two distinct activities: establishing new plantation forests on land that has not recently supported forest cover, and converting existing short-rotation plantations (typically harvested for woodchips) into long-rotation plantations (harvested for sawlogs). By extending the growth cycle of the trees, the project sequesters additional carbon in the forest biomass and stores it long-term in harvested wood products used for construction.
The project area lies within a high-rainfall zone essential for commercial timber production, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers. The region's soils are typically lateritic gravels and karri loams, which are well-suited to supporting the Pinus radiata (softwood) and Eucalyptus (hardwood) species common in the area. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of state forests, commercial plantations, and agriculture, including grazing and vineyards.
In September 2024, the project was renamed from "Maringee" to "FPC 2018 CP1," aligning it with the Commission's standardized naming convention for its carbon portfolio. This project is part of the FPC's broader strategy to expand the state's softwood estate, particularly following the WA Government's 2024 cessation of commercial logging in native forests, which shifted the industry focus entirely to plantation timber.
