2018 AGE CLASS - LIMESTONE PLANTATIONS

Project Information:

2018 AGE CLASS - LIMESTONE PLANTATIONS is a plantation forestry project located in the West Wimmera Shire of Victoria, situated immediately adjacent to the South Australian border. The project area lies approximately 20 kilometres east of the town of Penola and sits within the productive Green Triangle forestry region. Registered on May 25, 2018, the project covers 1,252.57 hectares and is managed by major forestry proponent OneFortyOne Plantations Pty Ltd.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2017. Specifically, it involves the "conversion from short-term to long-term rotation" activity. This methodology credits project proponents for changing the management of a plantation forest, typically by extending the harvest cycle (e.g., shifting from pulpwood production to sawlog timber). By allowing trees to grow for a longer period before harvesting, the project increases the average carbon stock on the land over time compared to the original baseline management.

The region is characterised by its favourable conditions for commercial forestry, forming part of the extensive Green Triangle estate which straddles the state border. The area typically receives high, reliable rainfall (often exceeding 600mm annually) and features soils suitable for deep-rooted pines, such as sandy loams over clay or limestone bases, consistent with the "Limestone" designation in the project name. The surrounding land use is dominated by softwood plantations and grazing.

OneFortyOne Plantations, the proponent, is a significant trans-Tasman timber and forestry company that acquired the South Australian government’s pine plantation rotations in 2012. Corporate records indicate a restructuring of the project's participation in May 2025, where the proponent name was simplified from a trust structure (The Trust Company as trustee for ANZFOF2 Sub 1) to OneFortyOne Plantations Pty Ltd directly. Additionally, a variation in 2021 saw the removal of certain areas from the project's registered footprint.
