Barney Gumble Reforestation Project

Project Information:

Barney Gumble Reforestation Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration project located in the Murweh Shire of south-west Queensland, situated north-west of the major regional town of Charleville. It was registered in August 2018 and covers an area of 28,000.92 ha.

Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) projects involve ceasing activities that suppress native vegetation, such as mechanical land clearing or overgrazing, to allow native forests to naturally regenerate from in-situ seed sources.

The Murweh Shire area is a semi-arid region well known for large-scale sheep and cattle grazing operations. The environment typically experiences low rainfall and is characterised by mulga lands with soils generally ranging from red earths to sandy and clay loams.

This project establishes permanent native forests from rootstock and lignotubers on land that was cleared of vegetation and suppressed for at least 10 years prior to the project commencing. Voluntary data releases note that carbon abatement for the site is modeled using FullCAM. The site's specific management changes include a complete stop to sheep grazing and mechanical clearing, with an option to carefully manage cattle at safe grazing pressures depending on regeneration levels. Furthermore, feral goat populations are actively managed and removed. In April 2024, the primary participant name was officially varied from Tacora Agri Pty Ltd to Prove Pastoral GP Pty Ltd.
