Smart Lighting Upgrade Project

Project Information:

Smart Lighting Upgrade Project is an energy efficiency project located nationwide across multiple built environments and serviced areas in Australia. It was registered in April 2018. Because it is an aggregated lighting upgrade spanning various distributed commercial and public spaces, it does not have a single project area size in hectares or a localized geographical footprint relative to a major town.

The Commercial and Public Lighting methodology involves upgrading, replacing, or supplementing lighting systems in commercial areas, roads, or public spaces to increase energy efficiency and reduce grid electricity consumption.

As this project occurs entirely within the built environment across various regions, typical regional land uses like grazing, cropping, or forestry do not apply. Similarly, standard environmental conditions such as high rainfall classifications or specific soil types like basalt or clay are not relevant to these indoor and street-level infrastructure upgrades. Instead, the project activities focus entirely on substituting older, energy-intensive high-pressure sodium lamps with highly efficient LED luminaires.

Interestingly, Northmore Gordon Environmental Pty Ltd, the project proponent, is a specialist energy and carbon consultancy. According to Climate Active public disclosure statements, Northmore Gordon retired a portion of the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated from this very project to offset their own corporate emissions and maintain their carbon-neutral organization certification. It is also notable that the Commercial and Public Lighting methodology was officially revoked by the Clean Energy Regulator following an independent review, meaning no new projects can be registered under this method. Despite the revocation for new registrations, active projects like this one continue to deliver abatement, and during the 2021-2022 financial year, this specific project was issued 15,545 ACCUs.
