Project Information:

Catchment Conservation Alliance - Great Barrier Reef Initiative Site #2 (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) carbon project located approximately 25km west of Baralaba and 130km southwest of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. Registered in September 2017, the project covered a substantial area of 9,522 hectares within the Fitzroy River catchment. The region is predominantly used for beef cattle grazing, a land use that historically involved the suppression of regrowth to maintain pasture.

The project operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) methodology, which credits landholders for allowing native forests to regenerate on land where they were previously suppressed. This involves activities such as the cessation of mechanical clearing and the management of grazing pressure to allow vegetation to reach forest status (defined as at least 20% canopy cover and 2 metres in height). The "Great Barrier Reef Initiative" branding suggests a strategic focus on revegetating catchments to reduce sediment runoff into the reef lagoon, a common co-benefit sought in this region.

Environmentally, the site sits within the Brigalow Belt bioregion, an area characterized by semi-arid to sub-tropical conditions with summer-dominant rainfall averaging around 600-700mm annually. The landscape typically features clay or texture-contrast soils, supporting open woodlands of Brigalow (Acacia harpophylla) or Eucalypt species like Silver-leaved Ironbark (Eucalyptus melanophloia) once regeneration is established.

Notably, this project was revoked on December 19, 2018, just over a year after registration. The revocation was enacted under section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation requested by the proponent, Terra Carbon Pty Limited. Terra Carbon is a subsidiary of the major carbon aggregator GreenCollar. Such revocations often occur when projects are restructured, amalgamated into larger aggregations, or if the landholder decides not to proceed with the specific project configuration initially registered.
