Kangaroo Carbon Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Kangaroo Carbon Project (Revoked) was a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Bass Coast Shire of Victoria, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the township of Wonthaggi and near the locality of Almurta. Registered in October 2017, the project spanned 325 hectares of agricultural land typically used for grazing. The project was voluntarily revoked in August 2024 under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, meaning the proponent chose to withdraw the project, likely before any carbon credits were issued or after relinquishing them.

The project operated under the Sequestering Carbon in Soils in Grazing Systems methodology (2014). This method requires landholders to measure baseline soil organic carbon levels and implement new management activities designed to increase those levels over time. Unlike model-based methods, this approach relies on direct physical soil sampling and laboratory analysis to quantify carbon abatement. Standard activities often include changing stocking densities, pasture renovation, or applying soil amendments to boost biomass production and soil health.

Regionally, this area of South Gippsland is characterized by a high-rainfall temperate climate (averaging over 900mm annually) and rolling green hills. The soils in the Bass Coast region are generally fertile, consisting of heavy clay loams and soils derived from the Cretaceous Strzelecki Group, which are well-suited to intensive dairy and beef grazing. The project aimed to capitalize on these conditions by introducing integrated pasture cropping, mixed species selection, and fodder mulching to optimize plant growth and nitrogen fixation.
