Grong Grong Methane Destruction Project (Revoked)
ERF111341
Project Information:
The Grong Grong Methane Destruction Project (Revoked) was a waste diversion project located at the Grong Grong Piggery, approximately 22 kilometers east of Narrandera in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Registered in March 2017 and voluntarily revoked in February 2022, the project was operated by the Pig Improvement Company (PIC) Australia, a leader in porcine genetics. The facility functions as a genetic nucleus herd, situated in a region heavily utilized for mixed farming, including cropping (wheat, canola) and livestock grazing.
This project operated under the "Destruction of Methane Generated from Manure in Piggeries" methodology. Piggeries typically manage waste in anaerobic lagoons, which naturally emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as manure breaks down. The project activity involved covering these lagoons to capture the biogas produced and subsequently combusting it (flaring), converting the methane into less harmful carbon dioxide.
The Riverina environment around Grong Grong is characterized by a semi-arid to temperate climate with rainfall averaging between 400mm and 500mm annually. The landscape features flat plains with soils dominated by red-brown earths (Chromosols) and cracking clays (Vertosols), which are fertile but require careful management to prevent acidification or erosion. The project's revocation in 2022 was enacted under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, indicating a voluntary withdrawal by the proponent, likely due to operational changes or a shift in waste management strategy.
